Govia launches full high speed service
On 13th December, Govia, the joint venture between Keolis and the Go-Ahead Group, launched the full high speed rail service, running between London and the county of Kent.
A preview service was launched in June 2009 between London St Pancras and the Kent stations of Ebbsfleet and Ashford. Other destinations with hourly services were gradually added to the offer in September and November. Initial results were very promising, with passenger trips tripling over the first 20 weeks.
Finally, the full fleet of 29 trains was launched on 13 December, reaching our in three directions, to north and central Kent and the coastal towns of Dover and Folkestone.
The introduction of the high speed service on Southeastern has furthermore brought about a whole new timetable with improved connections and more frequent services elsewhere on the network.
With top speeds of up to 225 kmh (140 mph) on the High Speed 1 line also used by Eurostar, the new service will dramatically reduce journey times and revolutionise the passenger experience.
High Speed will be a key component of the transport solutions used for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The purpose-built Stratford station is built right in the middle of the Olympic village within easy reach of the stadium and velodrome. The station is 7 minutes from St Pancras by High Speed and will also have connections to the Docklands Light Railway as early as 2010, serving Canary Wharf and the City.
